This semester, students from the Olivet College of Art & Design (OCAD) are taking a fresh look at the ancient art of typography in the course GD 200 Typography. Typography is the art, appearance and general design of printed matter using type. The course on typography is being taught for the first time this semester by OCAD Professor Patricia Oji.
Students begin the course by learning about the history of typography and its application in various printed formats throughout the centuries. Since typography dates back over 2000 years, its history intersects with Christianity, especially in relation to the variety of fonts used in printed Bibles.
When asked to comment on the class, one design student said, "It's exciting to learn this historically important form of art. Graphic design is always updating with new technology, but we will always need to know how to apply typography to our design.
By the end of the course, students will become proficient in the structure, layout, and culturally contexts of type. In addition, students will be able to apply modern fonts for the design of websites, newspapers, magazines, and banners.
