Olivet Institute of Technology students participating in College's research program are exploring hot topics over the summer break, including voice-over-Internet protocol (VOIP).
VOIP refers to the technology for the transmission of voice over the internet or other packet-switched networks. Its current use enables people to make calls over the internet at rates greatly reduced compared to those of traditional telecommunications companies.
"This summer's program is a great opportunity for students to examine the use of newer standards and protocols for multimedia communication sessions with zero- or near-zero-cost features," said a spokesperson for the research team.
Students this summer will also be exploring security issues in VOIP and related technology, and potential for is broader application in University settings.
