Olivet University -Olivet Leaders at Cape Town 2010

October 21, 2010

Leaders of Olivet University are participating in a historic event, Cape Town 2010: The Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization.  The event is being held at the South African city of Cape Town from October 16-25, 2010.  The conference is being held in collaboration with the Lausanne Movement and the World Evangelical Alliance.
The mission of the Lausanne Movement is to strengthen, inspire and equip the Church for world evangelization in our generation, and to exhort Christians in their duty to engage in issues of public and social concern.  The Lausanne Movement was founded by Billy Graham following a historic conference in 1966 held in Berlin, Germany.
Lausanne I was held in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1974 and included the creation of the Lausanne Covenant and shift in mission thinking to focus on unreached people groups following a presentation by Dr. Ralph D. Winter. Lausanne II was held in Manila, Philippines in 1989 bringing together 3600 leaders from 190 countries.  This year’s Lausanne III includes over 4000 leaders from over 190 countries.
The focus of Cape Town 2010 is on the major issues facing the global church today.  The issues have been divided into 6 major topics which include Truth, Reconciliation, World Faiths, Priorities, Integrity, and partnerships.  In addition, participants are reflecting on the book of Ephesians in order to give biblical perspective to these issues.
“This is one of the most vibrant conferences I’ve ever been to,” commented University President Dr. William Wagner, one of the few people who have attended all three Lausanne Congresses and the Billy Graham event in 1966.
Besides participation on site at the event by institutional leaders, Olivet University students are participating remotely through Lausanne’s GlobaLink website which connects nearly 700 site world-wide to the conference.  The hope is that issues discussed during the conference can have practical application throughout the institution.
