Olivet University -Olivet University Students, Alumni Remember Dr. William Alnor

November 15, 2011

This month would have marked the 57th birthday of Dr. William Mark Alnor.

Earlier this year, however, the Olivet College of Journalism professor passed away after a long battle with prostate cancer.  While gone from this world, his memory certainly lives on in those whose lives he touched.

“He taught me the ‘faith first’ principle,” recalled one former student, Dorcas Lim.  “He emphasized that unless we know the Word of God – the Truth – we would not be able to fulfill the responsibility of a journalist, which is to reveal the truth to the public.”

Lim also recalled how Dr. Alnor commuted regularly to the university to teach class even as he battled with cancer.

“He said he would teach OCJ (Olivet College of Journalism) students as long as the Lord allowed him to do so because he said, ‘I sense the presence of God here,’” Lim recalled.

“He was like a father to us.”

Another former student, Cindy Gonzalez, recalled how Dr. Alnor taught not only with his words, but through his own attitude and life.

“Dr. Alnor was a professor who really loved the Lord and his students.  He was a person of integrity, humility, and patience.  He not only taught us about journalism and gave us Bible-based perspectives, but he also demonstrated to students what a life lived like Jesus resembles, said Gonzalez."

On March 20, 2011, Dr. Alnor passed away, leaving behind his wife of 23 years, Jackie Alnor, and his three children and one grandchild.  He is also survived by his mother, brother, and two sisters.

On Nov. 30, the date of Dr. Alnor's birthday, students at Olivet University plan to hold a special prayer vigil for Dr. Alnor on the school’s campus.

In addition to Olivet University, Dr. Alnor also taught at California State University, East Bay.

Dr. Alnor was 56 years old at the time of his death.
