Olivet University -OU Weekly, First Student Newspaper, Near Release

January 21, 2009

Olivet College of Journalism (OCJ) is putting the final touches on Olivet University's first student-run newspaper.
College students, faculty and staff have come together to launch 'OU Weekly,' a newspaper written and published by students, for students.  Celebrated as the official voice to the student body, the newspaper will cover all aspects of student life—from breaking University news, to commentaries and in-depth feature stories on the people of Olivet University.
"There are so many great things happening each day at our University," said Katherine Phan, program director of Olivet College of Journalism. "OU Weekly will connect these events into a rich, written history of Olivet University for everyone to enjoy for generations to come."
Students from a variety of different fields were involved in the paper’s development. Olivet College of Art and Design students created its image. Students studying programming at Olivet Institute of Technology developed the backend. Student leaders were also tapped for editorial work to ensure the paper maintains an independent voice.
Dr. William Alnor, seasoned journalist and OCJ professor, will advise newspaper staff.
"[The paper] is very important for OU and I believe it will be a valuable platform for students to practice their skills," Dr. Alnor said.
Dr. Alnor and student leaders will host a forum with the student body in February to discuss the vision and direction of the newspaper.
