Art & Design Dean Presents Paper at International ACE Boston Conference - Olivet University

July 23, 2012

Dr. Joan Brix Carter, Dean of Olivet University's College of Art and Design, traveled to
Boston, Massachusetts in July to deliver a paper at the International ACE conference.
Founded in 1991, ACE is an international group of theologians, clergy and artists who meet
every two years in different parts of the world to address various issues concerning the
relationship between the arts and Christianity. The theme of the conference, scheduled for
July 8th through July 13th, is "Art and Christianity in Revolutionary Times."

The subject of Dr. Carter’s paper was the life and work of Edward Hicks, the late 18th
century painter best known for his many renditions of "The Peaceable Kingdom" based on
Isaiah 11:6. Quaker minister by profession, Hicks through his folk art style, was able to give
expression to his pacifist views to a wide audience of ordinary people.

Her paper will be published in an upcoming issue of ARTS MAGAZINE.
