The collaboration between Dwell Media and New York magazine opened the first City Modern event in celebration of design at the New York Design Center. Olivet College of Art and Design student, Diane Chen, was fortunate enough to be in the middle of its opening day. Chen interns for an online design publication and was assigned to attend the event after receiving an invitation.
Chen covered the event, which saw celebrated architects, interior designers, and industry leaders convening at a curated exhibition displaying the elite works of modern design from the 1960's to the present.
Nearly 100 architects and designers participated in the City Modern events, which ran throughout the week.
"City Modern has been a labor of love for Dwell Media and our partners at New York magazine," said Michela O'Connor Abrams, President of Dwell. "We are committed to bringing designers, architects and design-savvy consumers together to celebrate great design around the city. Our opening night featured incredible designers interpreting Design Through the Ages with excitement and flair for a packed crowd eager to explore modern design with us through City Modern," added Abrams.
The "Design Through The Ages" showcased exhibited works such as a Go-Go rendition of colorful furniture and wallpaper.
"Colorful, graphic, bold and wacky is what the sixties were all about," said designer Ghislaine Vinas. "The sixties was a time of rebellion and people were looking for a new spirit and for wild, fun, colorful alternatives to their parent’s drab pasts."
Additional exhibits were brought forth by designer Nate Berkus, who showcased vintage 1970 furnishing designs along with a new line of rugs available at Target.
"Design has always been an essential thread of New York magazine's DNA," said Larry Burstein, New York Magazine's publisher. "Our partnership with Dwell further establishes New York as a champion of great architecture and design and our shared commitment to this industry," added Burstein.
The event experience through OCAD’s internship offered students such as Chen to mingle with elite designers in the industry.
