Olivet University Introduction to New Testament course outline 2013

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Introductory survey of the New Testament, including the life and ministry of Christ and apostles. The course also introduces students to various texts of the New Testament, to their historical contexts and to several approaches for their interpretation.

RELATION TO THE COLLEGE STATEMENT OF MISSION:

The course supports the mission of Olivet University of training undergraduate students as “Biblical scholars and leaders” by providing theological knowledge on essential doctrines of Christianity.


COURSE OBJECTIVES:

After completing this course, students should be able to:
    •    Identify significant aspects of the social/historical/religious settings of the first century world in which the New  Testament was written.
    •    Examine the impact of specific people, groups, events, or ideologies on the study of first century Jewish thought and life
    •    Discuss critical issues related to an evangelical understanding of the New Testament.
    •    Demonstrate a working knowledge of the basic plot, literary styles, characterization, and themes of some of the books of the New Testament.
    •    Demonstrate a general familiarity with the historical, geographical, and cultural background of the New Testament period.


COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

    •    Attendance
Attendance is required for all class sessions and discussions. Unexcused absence will result in deduction from the final grade.
    •    Reading
Students are to final all the required readings before the lectures.
    •    Assignments
Students are required to write a paper in this course. The instructions for the paper will be distributed in the class.
    •    Quiz
There will be a short quiz at the beginning of each class session, except on the first day. The quiz will cover materials from the previous lecture.
    •    Exam
There will be one final exam at the end of the class.


COURSE TEXTBOOK:
Required:
A standard translation Bible (NIV is preferred. TNIV, RSV/NRSV, ESV, NKJV, NET, HCSB, NASB) . This is meant to exclude old versions, such as the King James Version or the Douay Version, and modern paraphrases, such as The Living Bible, The Message Bible, etc.
